Chipola College officials don’t plan to change the contractual status of the school’s head basketball coach after he was arrested for DUI Tuesday.
Head basketball coach Greg Heiar was arrested Tuesday night and charged with driving under the influence, according to court records.
Heiar, 32, of Marianna, was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol at 11:16 p.m. on Club Drive in Marianna, according to Jackson County court records.
He made a first appearance in court Wednesday morning, where he was granted a conditional release with a court date set for June 10.
The following statement was released by the Chipola College Office of Public Relations Wednesday afternoon:
“Because the incident occurred after hours and no students or college property was involved, Coach Heiar’s contractual status is not affected.”

Heiar is a good guy. We all make mistakes in life, and I’m sure this is one he will not repeat. I’m glad his status at Chipola won’t be affected. He has been a great leader for the basketball program there.

I would hope that he would step down from his job as coach and get help. We need positive role models for our children, and this shouldn’t be condoned.
