Sneads Police Chief Burt McAlpin has dropped out of the race for sheriff of Jackson County, citing the serious illness of a close family member as the reason for his withdrawal.
McAlpin’s mother was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month.
In an open letter to the public, which can be found on Page 4A of this publication, McAlpin said he must devote his time in the coming months to her.
“I have a special love, relationship and bond with my Mama, whom is also my campaign manager,” he wrote, “In the days, weeks and months ahead my family and I are focusing on doing whatever it takes to beat this illness, and with God’s help we will. A political election comes every four years; however, a loving supporting Mama comes once in a lifetime.”
McAlpin will continue to serve as the chief of police in Sneads, and said he appreciated the town council there for allowing him to seek the higher office while working as the chief law enforcement officer of his hometown.
