SNEADS — The Sneads Lady Pirates’ season came to an end Tuesday night, as the Wewa Lady Gators hit four home runs and controlled the game from start to finish for a 12-0 win in five innings in the 2A Regional Final.
The Lady Gators (25-2) advance to the state semifinals in Plant City.
Sneads’ season ends with a record of 14-12.
Wewa’s Samantha Rich went the distance on the mound and struck out 14 batters, while only giving up two hits.
Rich also connected on one of the Lady Gators’ four home runs in the game, hitting a two-run shot to left center in the top of the second inning to put her team up 6-0.
Karissa Childs started on the mound for Sneads, but had trouble containing a powerful Wewa lineup.
Hillary Chapman led off the game for Wewa with a single and came around to score on an RBI double by Rich.
The Lady Gators added another run in the inning and started to blow it open in the second.
A two-run double by Summer Grice put Wewa up 4-0 before Rich’s hit made it a four-run inning and a six-run advantage.
Meanwhile, Rich continued to dominate on the mound, striking out seven consecutive Lady Pirate hitters from the end of the first inning through the third.
Chelsea Pettis made it 7-0 on a solo homer to straight-away center field in the third inning and Chapman smoked an opposite field home run in the fourth to make it 9-0.
A two-run single by Ashley Gates gave the Lady Gators an 11-0 lead.
Trailing 12-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Pirates were able to get a lead-off base runner on in Bridget Dawson after a Wewa error.
But Dawson was caught stealing at second base before Rich struck out Melody Cain and induced a bunt out by Erin Harris to end the game.
