Marianna’s Keela McKay became the first Lady Bulldogs basketball player to sign a Division-I scholarship in 10 years Wednesday.
McKay signed a scholarship offer to play for Enterprise Community College at Marianna High School in front of family, fellow students and her coaches.
“It just feels great,” McKay said after signing. “I’m the first in 10 years, so it’s a pretty good feeling. I hope there will be more girls to start signing now.”
Her coach, Chucky Brown, said that it was a great moment for McKay, as well as the MHS program.
“I’m real excited about it,” the coach said. “It’s her dream to play basketball and get to continue her education.
“It’s a great feeling. She knew what wanted and we worked real hard with her. I hope this builds the program up and shows the other girls that there’s a light at the end of that tunnel.”
McKay agreed.
“I believe it will make the girls behind me step up even more and just go for it,” she said.
McKay said she expected to play the shooting guard spot at Enterprise.
“They need people who can shoot it and I can shoot it,” she said. “I think I’ll fit in just fine.”
Brown said that Enterprise’s style of play would suit McKay very well.
“Their style is to run and score and Keela is definitely a scorer,” the coach said. “More than anything, though, she’s a gym rat. She lives in the gym, which I know their coach loves.”
