Barnes hands Chipley 11-5 loss in Dixie Boys action

Two teams were in action at Optimist Park Thursday night with Barnes handing he visiting Chipley Dixie Boys an 11-5 loss behind the pitching of Chris Godwin while Grand Ridge shut out the young Zaxby’s 10-0 with Blake Edenfield on the mound,

In game one, Godwin quickly retired the first two batters before giving up a solo shot on a low outside pitch on a 3-1 count. Godwin regrouped and sat the next batter down swinging.

Barnes answered the home run with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning.

Ryan Riley led off with a walk and Brandon Burch tripled him home.

Godwin drew a walk to put runners on the corners and a passed ball scored Burch and put Godwin on third.

With two outs, Kaidd Golden took one for the team and Shayne Blanton singled in a Godwin. A strikeout ended the inning.

Chipley added one run in the top of the second inning. An error at first put the lead batter on base but a ground out down the line at first got an out.

A ground out to first scored the run before Godwin fanned the next batter to end the inning.

Barnes tacked on five runs in the second inning to make it an 8-2 game.

Jay Phelps led off with a walk and with one out, moved to second when Burch drew a walk. Godwin scored a run when he reached on an error at third.

With two outs, Ryan Hughes took advantage of his dropped fly ball in center field to score two. Golden and Blanton both drew walks.

Passed balls scored Hughes and Golden. A strikeout ended the inning.

Chipley added one run in the third inning of f of two hits while Godwin struck out two.

Barnes plated three runs in their final inning.

With one out, Riley and Burch were issued walks. Godwin sent one to center field that scored Riley.

With two outs, Hughes was hit with a pitch with Golden following with a single to score a run. A ground out to first ended the inning.

Chipley added two runs in their final inning. The lead off batter singled and scored with one out on an errant throw by the pitcher.

A singled scored the next run but a pick-off of the runner at third got the runner out at second. A strikeout ended the inning and the game.

In game two, Zaxby’s sent Taylor Strauss to the mound.

Grand Ridge scored two in the top of the first inning. Garrett Harris led off with a single and scored on Patrick McClain’s double. 

With one out, Rontravious Brown singled to score the second run but was out trying to steal second. A ground out to third ended the game.

In the bottom of the frame, with two outs, J. T. Meadows singled but a fly out to Brown at short ended the inning.

Brandon Moats had a two-out walk for the Grand Ridge Indians but a strikeout ended the inning.

Zaxby’s threatened in their half of the frame but could not execute a run.

With one out, Sean Henry and Brett Henry both drew walks but Edenfield fanned the final two batters.

In the top of the third inning, Strauss walked McClain but a throw from Mackenzie Taylor got McClain on an attempted steal of second. Michael Mader flied out to the pitcher and the next batter went down looking.

In the bottom of the frame, with one out, Adam DeWitt walked but Edenfield retired the next batter on strikes.

Mackenzie Taylor drew a walk but a fly out to Edenfield ended the inning with runners on first and second.

The Indians plated eight runs in the fourth inning.

Edenfield led things off with a walk and moved to second on an up-the-middle single by Aaron Green.

A single by Seth Craven loaded the bases for Brandon Moats two RBI single.

An error at the plate scored another run. Coach Clay Wells brought in Devin Ranew in relief of Strauss.

An error at short put Harris on first and a single by McClain scored another run.

A line drive caught by DeWitt at third accounted for the first out.

Brown drew a walk and Austin Branch and Green took advantage of back-to-back errors at short to reach base and plate two more runs.

Ranew fanned the final two batters to get out of the inning.

Edenfield retired the side in the bottom of the fourth on three straight strikeouts.

Action will continue in Dixie Boys on Monday when the undefeated Barnes takes on Chattahoochee at Optimist Park. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tuesday Zaxby’s will host Chipley in a 5:30 p.m., game while Rahal will travel to take on another Chipley team at 6 p.m.
