Bulldogs pick up baseball win

The Marianna High School Baseball team picked up a pair of solid county wins this weekend, the first coming on the road at the expense of Graceville High School and the second at home against Sneads High School. Friday night's win against Graceville was a 14-4 victory behind the pitching of Rhyne Elliott and Jeremy Barber. Saturday's game was an 11-0 win with Kyle Edwards on the mound.

In Saturday's match up, Edwards threw six no hit scoreless innings, striking out 11 and walking three, with one error behind him.

Trevin Hall drew a one-out walk in the first inning but was caught off the bag at first for the second out of the game.

Taylor Edge reached on a throwing error but Edwards fanned the next batter to get out of the inning with no harm done. In the bottom half of the frame, Tyler Wilson drew a lead off walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by Brandon Gardner. With two outs, Adam Bigale was issued a walk and Wilson stole home on a passed ball.

A ground out to short ended the inning with Bigale on first.

Edwards had a three up, three down inning in the top of the second, striking out the first two before a ground out to Gardner at short ended the inning.

Marianna threatened in the second with a one-out double by Lance Bailey who advanced to third on a passed ball. Bailey was left stranded at third.

Edwards worked out of a two-walk inning in the third with neither running advancing past second.

The Bulldogs put together a huge six-run inning in their half of the third. Wilson singled to start things off and moved to second when Gardner was issued a walk. Both stole a base to put runners at second and third for Dustin Miller's RBI single. Bigale sacrificed Gardner to third and Jon Sims doubled to score Gardner and Miller. Brandon Booth took first on a walk and Bailey took one for the team to load the bases. Dustin Larkin reached on a bobbled ball at second scored two. Colby Johnson walked and Wilson hit into a fielder's choice that got Johnson at second. A strikeout ended the inning with two left on base.

Edwards retired the next nine batters he faced.

Trevin Hall, on in relief of Jake Roberts retired the Bulldogs in order in the fourth inning. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs scored one run on a lead off walk by Booth who scored on a double by Laramie Dryden.

The final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dustin Miller drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Bigale's single. Bigale was out at third. Sims and Booth drew walks and scored on a walk-off double by Bailey, ending the game on the 10-run mercy rule.

On Friday night, the Bulldogs traveled to Graceville and sent Rhyne Elliott to the mound. Elliott went four innings, allowed seven two runs, one earned, on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Jeremy Barber came on in relief, allowing only one hit, two runs, none earned and striking out two.

For the Bulldogs, it was a home run night, with Tyler Wilson hitting a grand slam in the second inning, Jon Sims a three-run homer in the fifth and Brandon Booth a two-run shot in the final inning.

Miller had a double and a single, while Gardner and Larking both recorded a pair of singles.

For the Tigers, Aaron Taylor and Tyler Crutchfield recorded two singles, while Josh Taylor, Chase Ivey, and Stephen Burdeshaw had one single each. Justin Miles recorded a double.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to be back in action at Bulldog Field Monday night with first pitch slated for 6:30. Results of that game were not available at press time.

The Tigers will travel to Altha on Thursday with JV scheduled at 4 and varsity to follow at 6 p.m.
