Cubs pick up 8-1 victory over Angels in AA action

Baseball action continued hot and heavy this week in Dixie Youth AA action at Optimist Park. 

Thursday night, the Angels and the Cubs squared off in the early game with the Mets and Yankees taking the nightcap.

In game one, the Cubs handed the Angels an 8-1 loss. 

For the Angels it was three up, three down in the first two innings. 

In the third inning, with one out, Bryce Martin singled but two strikeouts followed to leave a runner stranded on first. 

The fourth and fifth innings produced no offense but in the sixth inning, the Angels got on board with a lead off single by Devin Tindall. 

With two outs, Tindall scored on a single by Mason Young. 

The Cubs struck early with four runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Pender Johnson got things started with a single and moved to third on a single by Aryan Charles.

Turner Seay’s RBI single scored Johnson. A singled by Brolin VanHuss scored two with VanHuss scoring on an errant throw. 

In the second inning, Jacquez Gainer had a one out single but two outs followed to end the inning. 

Charles singled in the third inning as did VanHuss but neither runners crossed the plate before a fly out to the pitcher ended the inning.

Chrishawn Dozier had a one-out single but the Cubs could not execute a run. 

The Cubs exploded for four runs in the fifth inning of play.

With one out, Johnson had a solo home run, followed by a single to Charles, giving him three hits on the night.

Seay singled home Charles and crossed the plate on VanHuss’ two run-home run for the final runs of the game.

In the final game of the inning, the Mets held on to take an 11-10 victory over the Yankees.

The Mets went on offense first with Carter Cass recording a one-out double.

The next two batters went down swinging with Cass stranded at second.

In the bottom of the first, lead off Lane Gullett doubled and, with one out, scored on a double by Austin Livingston. Dalton Smith doubled putting runners on second and third. 

Ryley Lipford cleared the bases with a home run.  Tyrus Dudley singled but two outs ended the inning.

In the top of the second inning, the Mets racked up eight runs.

Bryson Bryant got the Mets hopping with a home run. 

Not to be outdone, Loren Walden followed with a solo shot of his own.

Travis Morse got on with a double and scored with one out, Gunner Nebel got his name in the home run club with a two-run shot.

Joining the hit parade was Christen Fender with a solo home run. Dekiah Peterson singled and scored on a triple by Caleb Hawes.

The Yankees went quietly in the bottom of the second inning, with the side retired in order.

The Mets added one run in the third inning, a home run by Austin Couliette got things started. 

With one out, Loren Waldon made it a two home run night for himself.  Getting in on the home run derby show was Travis Morse. 

With two outs, Gunner Nebel added a triple to his stats but was left on base when the final batter went down swinging. 

The Yankees went down in order in the bottom of the inning as did the Mets in the top of the fourth. 

The Yankees’ rally fell short in the bottom of the inning as they posted six runs to come within one of tying the game.

Austin Livingston led off with a home run and Dalton Smith followed with a home run of his own. Ryley Lipford and Tyrus Dudley had back-to-back singles. 

A home run by Wesley Pippen cleared the bases.  Jacob Chabot singled but was left stranded when the next two batters went down swinging.

The Cardinals took care of the Devil Rays on Thursday night 14-3 victory.

Reece Dillard singled to start things off for the Devils Rays but three strikeouts left him stranded on first.

In the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals plated six runs.  Adin Domen singled and scored on a double by Tony Hall. Beau Alday doubled home Hall. 

With one out, Jaedan Hardy collected two RBIs on a home run. Justin Merritt singled and Kegan Jones tripled him home. Fredd Pruett’s single scored Jones but a strikeout ended the inning.

In the top of the second inning, the Devil Rays were three up, three down. 

The Cardinals added three runs.  Domen tripled with one out and scored on a single by Hall. 

A singled by Alday scored Hall but Alday was caught going to second. Marquise Kelly and Hardy had back-to-back singles but a ground out ended the inning with them left on base.

Noah Baxter singled for the Devils Rays with two outs but a third out ended the inning.

The Cardinals plated one run in the third, a one-out home run by Jones. Pruett doubled but was left stranded on the bag.

In the fourth inning, the Devils Rays struck for three runs. Reece Dillard got things started with one out and crossed the plate on Matt Griffin’s home run. A doubled by Kraven Howell scored on a single by Donte Sonaglia.

A single by Domen was the only offense for the Cardinals in their fourth.

Joshua Folsom singled in the fifth for the Devil Rays for their only hit of the inning.

The Cardinals added four insurance runs in the fifth but would not need them as time limit called the game following their at bat. 

Kelly led off with a double and scored on a home run by Hardy. Chase Meadows joined the home run parade with a solo shot. 

With two outs, Pruett picked up his third hit of the night, a double, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Dixie Youth AA will be back in action on Monday at Optimist Park with the Yankees taking on the Angels at the 5:30 p.m., on Field 7 and the Devils Rays facing the Mets at 5:30 p.m., on Field 8.
