Lady Indians still perfect in conference play

The Chipola Lady Indians softball team improved to 4-0 in conference play Thursday with double-header wins over visiting Pensacola Junior College at Chipola Field.

In game one, Brooke Muth took the mound for the Lady Indians, going the distance, giving up two runs on five scattered hits.

Chipola drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning.  With one out, Kasey Henderson singled and advanced to second when Melody Moore was hit by a pitch. Henderson was then caught on an attempted steal of third. Moore stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Chastity Covington.

The Lady Pirates answered in the top of the second with one run.  Pimentel was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Takacs.  Cooper reached on an error that scored Pimentel.

Pensacola added another run in the top of the third inning to go ahead 2-1.  Puertas had a one-out double and with two outs, Takacs reached on an errant throwing, scoring Puertas.

Chipola countered with four runs in the bottom of the third. Destiny Covington singled and moved to second on the throw. Henderson singled to put runners on the corners. Melody Moore doubled to score both runners. 

Chastity Covington was issued a free pass and Van Schoick took one for the team, putting runners at first and second. Alyssa Shirey singled to score run and Fannin’s RBI single scored another.

The Lady Pirates were three up three down in the fourth while Chipola added two runs. 

Destiny Covington singled and advanced to second on a stolen base. With one out, Meldoy Moore then connected for a two-run home run.

In game two, Amber Weeks took the controls for the Indians, going six innings. Weeks gave up three runs on two hits and four errors. 

Pensacola struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Mahowald took first when she was hit by a pitch. 

With one out, Mahowald scored on a double by Blackie with Blackie advancing to third on a passed ball. Puertas drew a walk and Takacs was out on a bunt fielded by catcher Shirey. Blackie stole home and the final out came when Pimentel popped out to third.

In the second inning, Oliveira grounded out to short for the first out of the inning for PJC. Cooper reached on a walk and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice by Whitney Ward.

Chipola answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Gainer drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Van Schoick. Both runners advanced on stolen bases to set up an RBI single by Muth.

Both teams were scoreless in the third inning but PJC added another run in the top of the fourth. Pimentel reached on an error but was caught stealing second. Oliveira was hit by a pitch and took second when Cooper was issued a walk. Ward hit into a fielder’s choice that got Oliveria at third but a double by Mahowald doubled to score the run.

Muth and the Lady Indian defense kept the Lady Pirates off the scoreboard for the next three innings. 

Chipola added a run in the fifth inning with a walk to Kennedy and singles to Destiny Covington and Henderson.

The Lady Indians tied the game in the sixth inning on a solo shot by Shirey.

With the game on the line, Destiny Covington led off with a single and an intentional walk was issued to Henderson.

Melody Moore singled to load the bases to set the stage for Chastity Covington’s walk off grand slam to make it a 2-0 afternoon for the Lady Indians.

The Lady Indians will look to improve their conference record to 6-0 when the host Tallahassee Community College on Wednesday with game times at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
