U.S. Congressman Steve Southerland spent most of Thursday in Jackson County, visiting Jackson Hospital and Wal-Mart employees before giving speeches and taking questions at two community meetings. The Republican legislator represents Jackson and 13 other surrounding counties in the 2nd Congressional district.

He was the keynote speaker at the Chipola Civic Club luncheon, and held his own town hall meeting at Chipola College later that day. After opening comments at the town hall meeting, he answered some of the 35 or more questions that were written down for his consideration by members of the audience. At the end of the Chipola College meeting, a man spoke from the floor, demanded that Southerland listen to him and saying he’d written Southerland a letter that the Congressman never answered. But Southerland refused to entertain his comments publicly and the man eventually stood down without having spoken a question or made any statement beyond his complaint about the reported unanswered letter.
